Cyanotype Reflection

1. What did you learn?
Through this project I learned about the process of cyanotypes. Before this project I had never heard of what a cyanotype is, and now I have successfully made two. I also learned about light sensitive chemicals work and how shadows play a role into how the cyanotypes develop.
2. Why did you chose the objects you did?
I chose to use a sea biscuit, feather, and sea urchin because they were accessible at my house and I thought they complimented each other well. The sea urchin and sea biscuit are both from the ocean so in addition to the blue background, the cyanotype I felt had the feel of being at the beach which I liked. The feather acted as a way to balance the cyanotype.
3. Did the objects appear on the cyanotype as you envisioned?
The objects did not appear on the cyanotype like I imagined. I thought the sea biscuits would look more defined and more recognizable. I also though the sea urchins would look more like a shell than just a circle. I also ran into complications with the feather because the day we did the cyanotypes it was windy and caused the feather to flap over so I imagined the feather to be more defined than it appeared as the end result.
4. What would you do differently if you did it again?
If I were to do this project again I would use more objects that create more of a story. I would also make sure I used a piece of glass to flatten my materials and that I would place my cyanotype in a place where less shadows were created.
